Across the Fence: 2012 Gaza war from the Israeli side

I photographed the 2012 conflict between Israel and Gaza from the Israeli side of the border fence. While, from the logistical perspective of the news organization for whom I was shooting, it certainly made sense to have an Israeli photographer covering the story in Israel and a Palestinian photographer covering in Gaza, it felt strange and frustrating for me to document and illustrate the story of only one side of a very asymmetrical conflict.

In recognition of this asymmetry, I decided to present images of my coverage of the war - shot within Israel - against the background audio of Israeli military shelling of the Gaza Strip.

Some of the included images were shot for United Press International and are © Mati Milstein/UPI
