Israeli air force planes fly over St. Peter’s Church in the coastal city of Jaffa as the country marks its 65th Independence Day. In 1945, Jaffa had a population of 101,580, of whom 53,930 were Muslims, 30,820 were Jews and 16,800 were Christians. When Jewish forces occupied the city on 14 May, 1948, only 4,000 of the city’s Muslim and Christian Palestinian residents remained.
